We tend to protect the things we understand, and sadly, sharks are largely out of sight, out of mind for us.

But, realize it or not, we are in a desperate race to save sharks – over 73 million will be killed this year. That’s o11,432 every hour and with some populations over 90% extinct, life or death is on the line, not just for the sharks, but also our oceans. The clock is ticking and we are losing ground. Even the shark sanctuaries in the word are under attack. We are witnessing the shark’s extinction before our very eyes – and the pace is quickening.

Tired of politics and wasted, duplicated efforts, the Shark Angels have come together out of a sense of urgency to prove that regardless of style, we can all work with one another – and that there are many ways to make a difference.

We believe that those of us passionate about saving sharks are tired of reading the grim statistics and becoming overwhelmed with the magnitude of the problem. Often that leads us into the mindset that we simply cannot make a dent. And we are disparaged by the differences in beliefs, the politics of conservation and the fact many of us duplicate efforts or spend more time fighting one another than the true bad guys. All the while, we are losing our true battle… and thousands of sharks are killed each day.

But, the truth is, EVERY SHARK COUNTS. And if we set aside our collective differences, we can start making a huge impact on the health of the shark populations throughout the world.

We aim to join our efforts and unite everyone around a new view of not only conservation but also sharks to ensure that they survive to play their important role in maintaining our oceans – and possibly, even in humankind’s own survival. We measure our accomplishments in the minds we change and sharks we save.

Simply put, we aim to save sharks. That is our only focus.

Through the angels, for the first time, many very different conservation organizations, are partnering together in an unprecedented way, able to effectively combine their unique approaches of intervention, outreach, education, technology, science, grassroots activism, enforcement and even legislation. Together, we are focused on stopping poachers, apathetic bystanders, illegal fisheries, corrupt politicians, ruthless Mafioso, and ultimately those creating a demand for shark fins.

And, the Shark Angels are making a real difference, serving as an inspiration to children and adults all over the world - proving this approach to shark conservation is both sorely needed and contagious.  Ultimately, to us, serving as inspiration is our greatest accomplishment. The Shark Angels are about symbolizing that all of us can do something – regardless of our skills or our approach to conservation. We can all come together and save sharks.

Whether we pull sharks from longlines, expose an underground shark fin trade, stop a shark fishing contest, increase dive tourism in a heavily fished area, implement an enforcement program that monitors catch in a Marine Protected Area, through scientific research identify an area where sharks need protection, or help people understand that sharks are not the monsters they seem, we can all make a huge difference and save the lives of countless sharks.
