SUBJECT: My support for NY Shark Fin Bill A.1769a/S.1711a

Dear Senator xxxx and Assemblymember xxxx,

I am writing to you today to tell you that I support the NY shark fin bill to make NY Fin Free and I hope you will too. Sharks are being killed at an alarmingly high rate and New Yorkers need to do our part in conserving and protecting one of the most important top predators in our oceans.

Please sponsor these bills A.1769a/S.1711a

Thank you,

SHARKS ARE KEY TO HEALTHY OCEANS
As predators at the top of the food chain; sharks maintain the balance of marine life in our oceans. Research shows that the massive depletion of sharks has had cascading effects throughout the ocean’s habitats – our planet’s largest important ecosystem.

SHARK POPULATIONS ARE PLUMMETING
Sharks are particularly vulnerable to overfishing because of slow reproductive cycles.   For example, Dusky sharks do not reach sexual maturity until they are approximately twenty years of age, and their gestation periods are typically around sixteen months.

FINNING IS UNSUSTAINABLE, WASTEFUL AND OFTEN ILLEGAL
Because of their exponential value thanks to a demand that outweighs the supply, sharks are often killed just for their fins, wasting up to 95% of the shark.  Studies indicate that at least half of the shark fin trade is “off the books,” supporting an illegal and dangerous industry.

SHARKS ARE WORTH MORE ALIVE THAN DEAD
A recent study by the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) in Palau estimated that each reef shark generates around $179,000 per year in tourism revenue.  This could add up to  as much as $1.9 million during its lifetime! In contrast, a single shark's fin fetches only around $108 when sold for shark fin soup.

MANY OTHERS HAVE DONE THE SAME
Around the globe over 52,000,000 people live in places that have gone Fin Free. Join California, Washington, Illinois, Hawaii, Oregon, Guam, Saipan and several cities in Canada by doing the same.
